Our Camels

HorrisHorris

Horris is the lead camel of our family and is aged 30 years old. The ‘Alpha Male’ of the group, Horris does what we wants, when he wants including being the first to the food or water. He always has to go in the first position of the train, otherwise he will push and bite all of the other camels on the bottom to get through to the front! Horris’ father, Thomas, also works with Ships of the Desert.

See a story about Horris and his father Thomas featured on the ABC.

IndiIndi

Indi is the baby of our group at only 10 years old. She came to Broome with Bella from Alice Springs. Indi was named after a competition with local Broome kids- and she tells us she is happy with the result! Indi is very very cheeky, and we think she has a bit of a crush on Horris, as always has to be right behind him in the train!

ZaraZara

Zara is another of our fantastic female camels in the Ships family. Zara was a lead camel at Western Plains Zoo in NSW and then also spent some time doing tours in Tasmania’s Bruny Island. Although a female camel, Zara is still remarkably reliable and strong for her size.

OllyOlly

Olly was named after the Aboriginal elder that caught him by lassoing him off the back of a Toyota Landcruiser at William Creek Station which is 200 kilomentres east of Cooperpeedy. Olly was also one of our camels who starred in the movie ‘Australia’.

DiggerDigger

Digger is one of the newer members of our family, coming to us from Alice Springs in the Territory. Named on his arrival by Sam, he is the typical 'Aussie Bloke' with a heart of gold and a tummy as round as they get! Digger loves his food and loves his walks along the famous Cable Beach. He has the longest eyelashes out of all our camels- making all the girls jealous!

AliceAlice

Alice the Camel has... ONE HUMP! Alice is our gorgeous little girl that joined us alongside Digger and Xena. Alice is very talkative- especially on the beach! During the cooler months, Alice stands out with her brown-red coat and bright WHITE legs! She likes leading the camel train or being at the back with her best friend Xena.

Mission

Mission, or Mishy for short, is one of our smallest and most affectionate camels. Named after the famous movie ‘Mission Impossible’ as when he was younger it was originally thought it would be mission impossible to get him trained. These days he loves being a part of our family and walking daily on Cable Beach.

Bully

Bully

Bully is an extremely affectionate camel who comes from Boulia in Queensland, hence his name. A victim of poor handling as a younger camel, Bully can be extremely head-shy at times but when he builds his confidence with you, he is a friend for life! Bully can always be picked out in the yard due to his curly coat and big inquisitive eyes.

RajahRajah

Rajah is one of the most affectionate camels that we have and loves following the staff around for cuddles and kisses! Rajah started out in South Australia at Victor Harbour Beach before being sold to Chris Hill. Rajah travelled to Broome around 4 years ago.

HarleyHarley

Harley came to us in November 2009 from Alice Springs. He is twenty-five years old and had been doing safaris in the desert with Aboriginal youth and also worked doing tours at Ayers Rock. His first visit to Cable Beach was rather interesting as he had obviously not seen the ocean before but he has now settled in and is a valued member of our team.

MatildaMatilda

'Waltzing' Matilda is our smallest female camel. We like to use her for children or small adults. Matilda was saved by her owner Chris Hill from an abbatoir in the Northern Territory who saw a sparkle in her eye and decided to take her home with him. She started in South Australia before heading to Broome. A very talkative little girl, with a lovable droopy lip!

XenaXena

One of our mature ladies of the family, Xena prefers to be at the back of the train- to see what everyone else is up to we think! Xena came to Broome almost a year ago with Digger and Alice, and to this day they are the best of friends, spending most of their time together. Xena worked at Alice Springs before Broome.

BellaBella

Bella the 'beautiful' camel was named alongside Indi in the competition we had for local Broome children. We think the name suits her perfectly! The gentle soul, Bella loves cuddles and kisses. Bella also has something very interesting about her- her hump slopes to the left hand side!

BazzaBazza

Big 'Bazza' is one of the newest additions to the Ships Family. He is also our tallest camel. He arrived with Rodney and Felix in Mid-April 2011. Bazza previously worked in Ayres Rock, but is loving his new life in Cable Beach. He's our loveable gentle giant!

RodneyRodney

Rodney aka 'Hot Rod' as we like to call him arrived at Ships with Felix and Bazza. He also worked at Ayres Rock doing tours. Rodney can be a cheeky chappy at times, but is also one of our most affectionate camels!

FelixFelix

Felix is our cuddly teddy bear camel. He is one of our largest and definitely the strongest camel we have in our train today. He joined the Ships family along with Rodney and Bazza in Mid-April. Felix loves doing our tours and often has a little sing-song as he walks!
