Proud of our Past – Excited about our Future…
Our business, and certainly the camel operators in Broome is indebted to Abdul Latif Casley (or better known as ‘Cas’)- the pioneer of Cable Beach camel rides.
The name Ships of the Desert was registered in the Northern Territory in the late 1970s. In early 1981, Cas went to Katherine to work on a movie which was eventually forced out of production due to funding. Cas then found himself in Broome with his wife and young family and without an income.
From there- Cable Beach camel rides were born! Cas would welcome customers to his camel farm where they would load the camels and ride through the sand dunes to the beach. Cas would then swap groups and bring other customers back to the camel farm for the twilight ride.
Cas now enjoys life in Thailand but returns to Broome each year.
